Data Collection

TQC collects data through various methods, including intersection manual turning movement counts, video data collection equipment, and portable automatic traffic recorders (ATRs). In all efforts, TQC works with our clients to deliver data promptly and the results are continually customized to fit the needs of the client/study. Data outputs typically include volume, classification, speed, but can be expanded to include bicycle and pedestrian data. Vehicle occupancy, Origin-Destination and parking studies may also be performed using unique data collection services.

TQC will regularly use video data collection equipment to collect data for 12-hour windows at intersections on behalf of our clients. This method is preferred by TQC as this provides the flexibility to process all or select hours, as well as perform queue and delay studies using recorded video later. TQC has established methods and documents which guide the performance of quality assurance and quality control and will implement these across all projects.

TQC traffic engineering practice has continuously matured during its 25+ years of existence. TQC has advanced data collection and traffic engineering technologies and practices and maintains an inventory of resources, both staff and equipment. Overall, TQC manages data collection projects throughout the tri-state area with 50 MioVision Scout Video Collection units, 160 Automatic Traffic Recorder Units, 110 Metro Count Units, 33 Turning Movement Count boards, 2 Jamar Black CAT Radar Traffic Recorders (Radar Detection Equipment), 2 SXBlue Platinum Kit with GSP Antenna for Asset Management, Video Data Collection Methods, and Tru-Traffic/GPS Software. The depth of resources available to TQC allows our firm to support multiple clients concurrently, while also maintaining sufficient resources to address services as needed.

TQC has been contracted to perform the following data collection tasks as part of our project experience.

  • Collecting traffic volume data using automatic traffic recorder (ATR)
  • Conduct manual turning movement counts (TMC)
  • Conduct automatic vehicle classification counts (AVC)
  • Conduct Transit Boarding, Alighting and Dwell Time Surveys
  • Conduct Travel Time Surveys and Analysis
  • Speed monitoring, Average vehicle (passenger) occupancy (AVO) counts
  • Origins and destination (O&D) counts
  • Collect Roadway Inventory Digital Imaging and other transportation movement data and characteristics
  • Collect GIS/GPS data inventory of locations and update roadway inventory databases

Project Specific Experience: TQCs experience in data collection and planning services includes supporting the NJDOT Roadway Information and Traffic Monitoring System Program. This is a project composed of both Short-Term Data Collection as well as database maintenance.  The project purpose is for consultant teams to perform updated traffic monitoring and data collection at NJDOT sites on a rotating, three-year basis with the goal to maintain the NJDOT Interactive Traffic Count Reports website (https://www.njtms.org/map/). TQC supports the NJDOT TMS Program as a subconsultant by collecting and reporting the following data

  • Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT)
  • 48-hour vehicle classification counts (FHWA classification scheme)
  • Continuous Count Volume Stations
  • Intersection MTCs
  • ATR Volume Counts (48 hrs. or 7 days) for State Routes, Highways and Ramps
  • Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) stations
